Travel log of not that bad actually. Entry XVIII

So I'm in Minnesota, which until this morning was just that minne.... something place I was flying out too. So far its been nice, place seems pretty interesting. I'm not really going to see any of it though since its an out and back trip. Here today and back tomorrow, reminds me a little of Milwaukee though. As is the norm though the hotel's cable channels are severely lacking. But I got my updates on some shows from Mo and teh inerwebs.

On an interesting note I was watching the bio channel on the animal house movie and WTF? Neidermier was the Master (bater) on Buffy? wow. never knew that.

Other than that works been work. made a few comical mistakes recently. Nothing big more funny than anything else and we found out that we are not buying tissues with office supplies right now. That was almost comical when we found that out, im sure we're gonna save alot doing that (sarcasm)
The holidays were mostly survived. We had both our families over for Thanksgiving where they met for the first time. There were no injuries but lots of food. Way too much pie, no really, way too much pie. Things went well though and now it the prep for the next bigun. By the time I get home our new tree should be there so we can start to decorate it together. Should be nice :)

Travel log of suck. Entry XVII

day 1:
TSA still sucks, philly airport still sucks. Yup things are normal. Kid in seat behind me decides to kick on and off throughout flight, I imagine the governators response from kindergarten cop and wish his parents had given him Nyquil before the flight. Finally get where I’m going and find out that I apparently have had a credit card since I was 9 and decided in August that I wasn’t paying it anymore, defaulting on about 13 grand. You would think I would know about this but apparently it didn’t seem strange to anyone at the credit bureaus that a 9 year old would do this back in 85. Time to check my credit report, the real one not the cheesy one from the annoying commercial. And yes, room service still sucks.

Day 2:
St Louis is still grey and rainy, looks like its gonna be like this for the duration. And why would a full size standalone starbucks not have breakfast sandwiches?

Day 3:
Traffic he is interesting but still basically sucks. Google misled me and the starbucks it told me about actually doesn’t exist, I’m picturing an angry Armenian saying no food for you now. Class went… well it went. Because they couldn’t stay on topic I had to eat and teach through lunch to try and get them caught up, I’ve never had to fight to be heard over a din of other conversations before. One guy had the nerve to look annoyed that I asked him to stop so we could continue. Budget rental was fun since I had problems getting there but I finally just make it to the airport and have enough time to inhale a shitty burger before boarding. On a side note, I am no longer wondering why burger kings are closing locations. Land and have enough time to buy a ticket and make my train from Baltimore to dc. with 5 mins to spare. Amazingly there’s highlights of this trip.
So far is that I was able to finish a book I had been meaning to read, the credit investigation finished in a day and cleared the errors, and the texts I got from Esmeralda in the cab to the hotel actually made me smile while not in front of anyone. The room was actually really nice and actually had some good channels on the tube, too bad I got there at 11:30. Went out for food ate at midnight and fun filled last day.

Day 4:
Finally get some breakfast and roll in and start working on clients projects, helping out with stuff. Would be nice if they had an office in Philly Id have an interesting decision to make then. Aint gonna happen though, but would be nice as I like the crew here and they appreciate and respect me. Make it to my train home (thank friggen ((insert deity of choice here))) with about 3 minutes to spare and I was good and didn’t hit the dipshit women who thought I was a woman and laughed about it afterwards. I wasn’t that pissed till I heard them say I deserved it. Is murder illegal in every state? Ugh, train lost power but almost back to Philly. Then I deal with septa and then done for the night. Then I get to actually try and catch up with crap tomorrow.

Why do I do this again?

Is it wrong if I recognize landmarks in the real world because of a video game I played in a virtual rendition of the city? How about if said game was almost about destroying said city? Anyway much new, slight sum up:
Wedding plans are going well
Family is coming down for Thanksgiving, and we might actually have both side meet for the first time. This should be interesting
Rally is on tv in HD and I found a local go-Kart track. Sweeeeeet
Cats still in charge of house.
Brutal Legend is cool.
I'm practicing with the cappuccino machine.
Long weekend way back when in Catskills was awesome.
and other stuff that I keep meaning to post about but never get around to.

This concludes our broadcast day see you next whenever.
ps, I hate loud people on trains, probably a good thing I dont carry a taser.

Just had to share...

I'm loving the fact that Apple is finally getting some press for their ridiculous actions and in some minds are not being seen as the savior anymore. With the google voice debacle that has the fcc looking at them to their latest act of stupidity they have now decided to censor a dictionary.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/05/apples-new-low-censoring-a-dictionary/

So when they aren't denying apps that they have arbitrarily decided "duplicate functionality" (hmm didn't they rail against another company for just bundling a program but not forcing you to use it?) they feel we are not able to handle words their own dictionary will show us.

There was a great quote in the comments from one of the articles that sums it up nicely..
"Want to feel like an overprotected child? There's a phone for that!"

On the road again..

Well I'm moving my way out west this week, at the moment I'm in Columbus Ohio. Should be interesting, if nothing else I have nice rental car. That in itself was a challenge as for whatever reason the place I finally went with was less than half what the others wanted to charge me, and I even got a Mitsubishi Eclipse too. So I'm having fun with that, but not too much as Ive heard stories about the cops and speeding tickets in Ohio.

Later this week I head to Seattle which can be fun as Ive never been there but have wanted to for a while. Plus I may be able to swing by and check out a jewelry place for the ring designs, and then its a fun (sarcasm) red-eye flight home for the weekend. Cant say I'm really looking forward to the amount of time Ill be in planes this week. Anyhoo, thought id have more to say but seems like my brain is shot now. So heres hoping my classes tomorrow go well.
p-

Look a non crappy post.... no really

Well here I am in DC, now I know what you're thinking. Ugh heres the part where he complains about something. That would be incorrect in this case, which is partly why I'm actually posting now, if for no other reason that to prove its not all doom and gloom.

And yes, I can hear you not believing me. Stop that, you're making Raziel sad.

Now to prove how things dont actually suck, the day wasn't bad (it did rain though)...((stop that)) but after work I got back to the hotel in time to watch Batman, The Brave and the Bold. Which if you haven't seen it is a hilarious cartoon. Aquaman was never better, which after saying it doesn't mean much. But here he really rocks in a comically ridiculous way. And where did I watch this (you already said it was in the hotel) ((yes yes I know)) you might ask? In one of those massage chairs. Add to that the hotel has free shoe shine service and my shoes actually look one shade of black its been a nice few days minus one thing (bonus points if you can guess what the one thing is)

So see? Its not all doom and gloom. (it'll probably rain this weekend)

ahhh crap.

Mondays suck

Mondays Suck, I can say this especially after the Monday I had but I also have many Mondays of experience to draw upon for a thorough analysis if need be. Between my media hard drive going under due to a Seagate screwup, missing the train by 3 minutes, having a cabbie try to take me to 115 and 5th not 115 5th, it gets better when I get to wait over an hour for a train that doesn't leave NYC due to a "police action". Lovely. So Ill eventually get home tonight at I'm assuming 9, with enough time to get my crap together for a flight to Milwaukee for the rest of the week.

If my back feels the way it does for the rest of the week I have a feeling I'm going to go over the dosage of aleve.

Oh yeah, my "doctor" sucks too.

rant over.

You mean I can post on this?

Wow, I really need to write more here. The last post I made was just over a year from the previous one. (by the way, thanks siliconivy ) I managed to get the presentations done and things went well. I even got something in the mail asking about publishing work. I’ve a feeling its basically a form letter but its cool all the same.

Its weird looking back at a few of the older posts… which is easy since there aren’t many, I honestly got a laugh at the one where I was lamenting having 50 unread emails. Considering I started today at almost 900 and finished around 350, 50 would be like a dream. I’m hoping to get below 200 by Friday night if I work on the plane ride home, cause I’m up in Boston for a few. Should be interesting, I get to see one of my counterparts and swap ideas and things while we go over another program we’re going to be handling. Which is gonna be par for the course this year as a bunch of new features and programs are coming out. At least at the moment it’s a little slow so I wont be on the road too much.

But back to the past, much has happened, but is too much, le’me sum up.
Went back to Jiu-Jitsu, Popped Knee, Hunted for house, Found house, Went to Japan, Got back from Japan, Moved into house, Kept moving into house, Started unpacking….. decided to continue that… later, after I kill Count Rugen.

Sooo not much happened as you can see. I’ve penned a bunch of posts in my head over that timeframe, even started writing a few out and just never got the time or made the time to finish. By nature I tend to internalize and keep my thoughts to myself. Always been that way, cant say I like that but its usually more comfortable. So Id like to say Ill post more but who knows.

Other than that my parents are coming down this weekend to check out the place. Should be cool as they haven’t seen it yet, we almost got both our families together for Thanksgiving but it just didn’t happen. Who knows next year it might, which is good since I can stockpile the booze Ill need to get through by then. And then after that It looks like almost the entirety of the gaming crew will be together , so I’m looking forward to much Rock Band, Cthulhu killings, Vindicator property damage and whatnot. Providing my back doesn’t fall apart by then.

So it seems like I’ve used up all my meandering words for the day and stuck in the requisite princess bride quote. Night all
p-

So here I am in Ithaca, NY. Its cold and Grey… But in some ways its quite beautiful up here in the middle of nowhere. On the plus side the hotel is kinda nice and it has more channels than most of the hotels I stay in…. too bad there’s nothing on TV to actually watch. Besides that there’s a starbucks and an Irish pub connected to the hotel. I’m crossing my fingers for cider, I could use that about now as my back is killing me.

Works been meh with the constant running around with not much of an end in sight and I’m actually getting sick of looking at my laptop.
Eughuh – or the trip that was….. something. Hey im tired

Anyhoo this has been an interesting trip so far, as well as the weekend preceding it. And so far its been kind of a mixed bag, some good, some driving me insane.. and some just pissing me off.

Saturday I tried yet again to fix the Scorpion. And once again doing what I was told will fix it was to no avail. At this point I refuse to give up one more cent or one more second of my life to fix that piece of shit. While I love driving it, and typically enjoy working on it, I am sick of tracking down endless problems with a screwed up and bodged electrical system and constantly trying to discern the issues with an engine that after following others advice and checking things against the books it still fails to give me an inkling that I'm making any sort of progress. So at this point its sitting till I get a house and have the time to really do the work that I have planned. And at that point Ill rip the shit out of the car and actually do things right so they work.

So that was a fun sat, oh yeah I did have fun chatting with techtigger and scott who had come by to help with the car though. Sunday was supposed to be nice but instead I felt like shit. Unfortunately a message I was supposed to receive at noon didn’t show up on my phone till 8 at night. (sorry ang, I wasn’t blowing you off. I had figured you guys just went early) So after spending all day (not kidding) sneezing I prepared to fly out west again Monday.

As usual the trip was… interesting. The first part out sucked, as once again I got to spend many hours in an uncomfortable seat that doesn’t recline. Then I land in Vegas. And find out that my connection is not only delayed its in a different terminal that is only accessible by going out of security and then back in through another security checkpoint. This is a fucking joke, even philly which sucks has a shuttle between terminals. So after going through this and then being reminded that I have to throw out my drink I purchased after going through security in philly I wasn’t in front of the gates. No after security there is a tram to the gates. Yes instead of having a shuttle between the gates the only way to get to this terminal is a tram. Sometimes I really hope for the tsa to get completely reamed and reorganized so someone who has a clue is running it.

So eventually I get to San Fran and make it to the hotel and try to get some work done before I passed out, and on the way some of the rooms facilities were broken down by my sheer abilities. But at least the room is ok. Too bad dinner wasn’t.

So the first day onsite was cool, things went pretty well in class and we dialed in the information I needed to finish a presentation for the next day. This client is pretty cool and I actually like working with them. In all honesty I’ve been lucky with just about all of them. Its just the getting to them that usually sucks. The presentation the following day went really well considering the guy in the next hotel room kept me up with their snoring. Thankfully the feedback I got was good and they seemed happy with it. Ill probably be giving it in their other offices in the near future, I can only imagine how it’ll be if I’m awake and coherent :p

And then the trip continues, the way to the airport was fine and I was actually looking forward to the flight, why you ask? Because I was flying on Virgin America, after everything I’ve read I wanted to see if it really was that nice. However I needed to get to the plane first. The check in area was pretty nice compared to the typical airlines and when I approached one of the reps asked me if I was on my flight, however they mentioned a different time than I had expected. Turns out the time I was looking at for departure was really the time it was supposed to land, thankfully the plane was delayed so I had no problems making the flight….. err except that it took me four kiosks to check in and then it wouldn’t print my ticket. Apparently they are still working out the bugs the woman said, she also said “gee it seems like someone doesn’t want you to get on this flight!” Yeah, really made me feel comfortable. The flight itself was awesome though. I had been lucky enough to be in first class a few times before but this was the best flying experience I’ve had. The seats have more controls than some lazy boys or most modern car seats, there’s a real three prong plug, two usb ports, a cat5 plug, a tray table, a touchscreen monitor that I can play music, watch tv, play games, watch movies, etc on. And yes it was awesome. Unfortunately the flight wasn’t long enough for me to watch hot fuzz, but the playlist I made was nice to listen to while I worked on my laptop. They even served a pretty cool snack box. But let me be clear, no tiny pretzels or snack bags. It had three really nice snacks, One was a mozzarella basil tomato thing, another was a fruit ball and prosciutto, and for dessert there was a chocolate covered bonbon thing. All of which adds up to the first flight where I was actually sorry we landed when we did. Ill definitely make the trek up to nyc to fly them the next time I’m heading out west.

So now I’m finishing dinner and typing this up while getting ready for tomorrow. One more day to go before heading home to my baby and collapsing after a redeye. Here’s hoping I still have some travel karma left for tomorrows flight.

uhg

Really, Im gonna get these done...

Well I'm in the train again coming home and working most of the way back, both on my things and the offices. I have to admit though, its kinda cool to be using my laptop, connected online via my phone, working on clients files wile working on my dvr computer at home all at the same time.

My only gripe is I have so many little side things I want to do and either don't have time for them or when I do have time they are the last thing I feel like dealing with. My goal is to get several of them taken care of in the next two weeks. I'm figuring the easy ones will be the ones I don't really need to be home for, since I'm back in Florida next week. I guess by putting them up here Ill amlost be guilted into getting them done.. yeah I don't know either.

Anyway I figure I should be able to get the dvr sorted to the point where I wont be futzing with it for a while, and start to learn .net programming. Id also like to get my unread work emails under 50. Those should be relatively easy, getting a dentist appt for myself and the kitties (preferably not the same place) shouldn't be hard except for finding an available day. Same thing for taking one the exams for the ARE. The hard one would be getting the Scorpion running again, stop laughing Ang, I can her you from here ;)

oh well, who knows. mayby it really does want to run...

Ugh

heh, I'm all ready to post about how the trip has been annoying so far and I notice the last post I made was pretty much the same.... hmm going to have to change this trend I think.

That said Im still going to bitch, but then I'll get to the normal or other things That may or may not be

This was the first time I flew using Southwest. I have a feeling it will also be the last, The seats weren't exactly comfortable (Ive never understood the connection between leather and comfort) and Id swear they were smaller than the crappy America West ones. You get less to drink, although the snacks were better. But even on the long trip from Chicago to Oakland, the seats don't have the air power ports. This really annoyed me since I finally purchased a converter and on the last trip to Florida the flight did have them. Adding to the fact that the first leg had the hardest landing Ive ever had I'm considering different airlines in the future. I just wish Jet Blue worked out of Philly.

The interesting thing in the airport though is that I had forgotten to take my leatherman tool out of my bag, and although they looked at my bag a second time they decided it must have been my pens or cables or something. Gotta love the useless tsa huh? Feeling safe yet? So anyway Ill probably have to mail it back to myself so I don't run the risk of having to replace it on the way back. Cause god knows you can take over an entire plane with a pair of pliers now.

So anyway on the good front, Die Hard was actually really cool and much fun was had by the troupe that went. Viggo, I dont have your email so this should explain a bit of the bittorrent that I was talking about. If you want to know more let me know. My DVR is coming along and can now be programmed from anywhere with web access. Still have a few things left to customize and do but its getting there and has a nice shiny box now to boot. Oh yeah, Potter part 7 was really cool, reminds me that I still want to finish reading some of my other books.

I'm sure I'm forgetting things but for the most part things have been good minus all the travel. Hopefully Ill be able to get some of my to do list taken care of while I'm out here. Still trying to figure out what I want to do when I take time off though. the idea of taking a few days and just going somewhere on the bike sounds nice, but I'm not sure if thats the plan. Oh well, deal with that another time. For now heres hoping my classes this week go well again.
p-

ugh, is it time to go home yet?

So here I am in a hotel once again. The trip only partially sucked, although I found out that the hotel I'm in is the one that I diddnt want to be in. I now have a lovely view of the construction at the Airport and unless I take a cab somewhere I'm living on room service for the week. Yip-fukin-ee.

So its been a "fun" Monday, at least the client down here is cool, and the DVR I built is working, since as usual the channels I watch aren't on the tv in the hotel. Kinda cool watching the transformers episodes from down here though.

Cthulhu and the Christian$....

Well on the interesting side Ive just noticed there was a movie made in 2001 called Dagon based on a H.P. Lovecraft story playing on SciFi. Not sure if Ill watch the whole thing but its definitely something to see on a slow day.

On a more sad and interesting note has anyone else been following how the Church of England is bitching because there is a video game set in an alternate reality where humans are fighting off an alien race and there happens to be a scene that takes place in a famous landmark that happens to be a church.

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/16/church-of-england-thanks-sony-for-apology-its-not-enough/

If I needed one more reason to be sick of sonys business practices, cowtowing to a whiney church who wants a "substantial donation" is a good one. Ugh.

are we there yet?

So its been a while… hmm where to begin… well on the plus side I haven’t seen any tentacles reaching out of the darkness towards me recently.

So basically its been a long friggen time since the last post. Didn’t mean it to happen and I’ve had many a post written up in my head that “I’m gonna write that up later tonight once I get done with this…” and either I didn’t get done with whatever I was doing or I just didn’t remember/ have the energy to think and write. The holidays were really nice and I thoroughly enjoyed being with Mo and her family as they are just as insane as mine. So things went smoothly and there was much rejoicing… and some explosions. Ahh the sounds of merriment at the holidays… “watch this……. BANG!! Heh, wasn’t supposed to just explode like that..”
I honestly cant wait till July 4th between the yearly gathering with my old fencing buddy where a wrestling match eventually takes place and the possible explosions with relatives it should make for fun times. But anyway, back to the past.

The past few months have been interesting at work, with me getting grinded up to finish a series of events that we were going to run. Unfortunately the team had little to no time to actually get the work done and the majority of it was on my plate. In some ways I prefer this as I then have the control to make sure its done the way I want it. But I would have liked to have had the time to be able to have others more involved. As it was I only had one other person to really make the content with me. As the events came and went my desire to strangle and kill became slightly… err more pronounced. I had gotten sick from running myself ragged and wasn’t very pleased about that as well as the amount of my own free time I had to blow to get the work done.
In the end I know my work is appreciated and they try to take care of me. In fact they sent Mo out to Cali with me on this last run so we could actually see each other for a few days. That was really nice. Its kinda interesting out here, it’s a weird feeling driving through a city intersection where you can see the top of a sky scraper at eyelevel and you cant see the road you’re driving on because its falling away from you. Nice city though, I still say I don’t think I could live here, but its definitely a nice place to visit and will check out a few other places the next time I’m out here… which will be in two weeks. ug. And next week I have to fly to Florida, ug. But after this run is done I might get to stay in one state for a little while…. I hope. I’m going to be training one of the new hires to do much of the work I’m currently doing so I can concentrate on more advanced topics and issues. Hopefully a side effect of this will be I can stay near home more often.

So at the moment I’m stuck in an airport waiting for a delayed flight home. Of course since I don’t get in till morning Ill be stopping by the office for a while before I get to go home so I can take care of some things before I collapse. And since mother nature is still on crack my hope of getting to finally ride my bike this weekend is dashed in the snow. Hopefully Ill be able to get that out soon and then get the car running again before Carlisle comes around. So before this gets too long (too late) Ill sign off and try to post more often as I think it can be somewhat therapeutic…

I just hope no one snores on the plane…. I would prefer to not get arrested for trying to “fix” their problem….

Anyway it looked a bit interesting.

COMBAT CARDS 2.1

watch wildcat_714 fight

CREATE YOUR CARD

So here I am at level 0. Hmmm, getting images of paper lad.

Also Im wondering, should I be calling laughing_fox mom now? (she is my parent afterall ;p)

Well anyway, the flight back from Boston went well. The pilot was cool and funny, nothing like hearing, "please pass all unwanted items to the flight attendants for disposal.... keep in mind this does not include past or present spouses or children" in a completely calm and chipper voice. So now its the rally up to NY and then racing cars and seeing a musical on Evil Dead.
